A Review of Skosh, One of The Best Restaurants in York
Feb 01, 2023
Skosh has got to be one of the best restaurants in York, right?
Last week was my birthday and Mr Leeds Food Tours treated me to a very special lunch at Skosh, as I'd never been before and had wanted to try it for ages. Everyone I know who has been always raved about it, and they weren't wrong!
Skosh is based in York, so it's not a usual Leeds Food Tours review, but as York is just 23 minutes from Leeds on the train, I thought you wouldn't mind!
Skosh serves up contemporary British small plates with an international twist, which was a pan-asian twist when we visited last week (I love Asian food so we chose the right time!).
You choose a selection of dishes from the menu, designed to be shared, and they are served one or two at a time so that you graze. We had 9 different dishes plus a dessert each.
- Hen's egg with onion and px sherry (the best dish, a must order)
- Salt-aged duck breast, rhubarb jam, sichuan chilli oil & kalettes
- Braised beef cheek with broken rice
- Vacherin mont d’or & rye ‘mille-feuille’, artichoke, truffle & horseradish (from the savoury dessert section)
The wines were spot on too! We couldn't decide so ordered two half bottles of different white wines, starting light and then one with loads of body. I also had an amazing glass of English fizz, and we finished with a rich dessert wine.
Service was impeccable, the atmosphere of the restaurant was buzzing but really relaxed (considering how fancy the food was too!), and we sat at the bar looking straight into the open kitchen which was a nice touch.
It was also affordable and far more accessible than other places of a similar standard. I think this is partly because it's not a tasting menu, so you can choose to go all out or just have a few snacks. But great value for money for the quality!
If you're looking for the best restaurants in York and want something special but in no way pretentious, please take my recommendation for Skosh!
